50 DANGEROUS THINGS (you should let your children do)
How many of my readers are wondering what in the world to do with your children during their summer break. I know from personal experience that about a week or two into break they start getting really bored which then leads to arguments among them and well the list can go on.
Recently I had the opportunity to check out the book 50 DANGEROUS THINGS (you should let your children do). This book is absolutely adorable and has some wonderful ideas in it. Some of the things listed we already do with our children, but some of the ideas were fresh and age appropriate for not only my 4 year old but also my 15 year old. One of the things listed brought back fond memories of my children. It was putting pennies on the railroad track for the train to run over. Where I lived growing up we had a track that ran across our driveaway. Every summer we would hear the training coming from afar and run down there to place our pennies on the track. It sounds crazy as an adult but was super exciting at a child.
A few of the things mentioned are:
01 - Lick a 9-volt Battery (who hasn't done this one)
06 - Drive a Nail
10 - Play with the Vacuum Cleaner
24 - Construct Your Own Flying Machine
38 - Learn Tightrope Walking
46 - Superglue Your Fingers Together
About the Book:
Fifty Dangerous Things (you should let your children do) is the first book from the people who created Tinkering School. With projects, activities, experiences, and skills ranging from “Superglue Your Fingers Together” to “Play with Fire,” along with 48 other great ideas, the book is a manifesto for kids and parents alike to reclaim childhood. Easy to follow instructions, fun facts, and challenging undertakings that will engage and inspire whole households.
Why Fifty Dangerous Things? First off, Five Dangerous Things just weren’t enough (although the audience at TED thought it was a good starting point). More importantly, there are many “dangerous” things that are interesting, eye-opening, enlightening or just plain fun! And while there are aspects of danger in virtually everything we do, the trick is to learn how mastery actually minimizes danger. Most of us learn how to walk without toppling over at a very young age, so that walking is no longer dangerous. Next we learn to negotiate stairs. Why stop there? Why not practice and become proficient at walking on the roof or walking on a tightrope? These are just a few of the Fifty Dangerous Things that we invite you to try.
50 DANGEROUS THINGS (you should let your children do) was released on May 3 with a SRP of $18. Click Here for places you can purchase this fun book!

this post really caught my eye. funny thing is, most of these are things my siblings made me do anyway;) (some of which my mom gave em H for...LOL). I know we protect our kids alot and there are some fun things to do that are most like science experiments. Ya gotta let them have SOME fun.
Hmm...walking on the roof. Guess my brother and sister did this on our farm...on a corn crib...and they were TWO and THREE years old. My mom still shudders when she tells the stories of the Dangerous things we did. I am sure it would be more like 5 THOUSAND though!
